Phoenix, Arizona Mosquito problems and control

Mosquito Control, Habits and Information

The best reason for mosquito control - Protecting you and your family from a virus that kills many people a year, were not talking 10's of 1000's of people but enough -  why risk it.

What's worst is the larger number of people that you don't read about in the papers that come down with debilitating health issues and problems that effect them and their loved ones for the rest of their lives because of the West Nile Virus

“Disease statistics are but pale shadows of the very real human experience of this devastating disease. This is not a benign disease, to be taken lightly,” said Joseph M. Conlon, technical advisor to the AMCA. Indeed, since 1999 nearly 28,000 cases of West Nile Virus, with over 11,000 cases of neuroinvasive disease and 1,100 fatalities have occurred in the United States, the world’s most advanced nation.

What is the WEST NILE VIRUS ?

It's one of a group of viruses spread by mosquito bites

  • Mosquito-borne viruses such as encephalitis and dengue fever, are not new to the U.S. West Nile virus is more recent, and is a growing health concern.

West Nile virus can cause mild to severe illness

  • Most people who get infected do not get sick. Some get a mild, flu-like illness. In rarer cases, the virus can effect the brain and spinal cord, and can be fatal.
  • If any symptoms appear, they generally appear in 3 - 15 days.
  • Milder symptoms may include: fever, headache, body aches, rash, swollen glands - see you health care provider to determine if treatment is necessary.
  • Severe symptoms may include: high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, muscle weakness, confusion, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma - severe cases may require hospitalization.
  • Older people and others with weakened immune systems are most at risk for severe illness, but West Nile virus can effect anyone.

Some birds carry the West Nile virus in their blood

  • Mosquitoes that bite these birds can become infected.
  • Crows appear to be the best carriers of the virus.
  • An infected mosquito can pass the virus to people and animals
  • The virus is not spread from person to person like a cold.
  • In a small number of cases the virus has been spread through blood transfusions, transplanted organs and breast feeding, and from mother to child during pregnancy.
  • Cattle that get West Nile will walk around in a small circle till they die.

Mosquito Prevention Tips and Information

  • Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water - Eliminate standing water in receptacles or containers in your yard including green pools, rain barrels, fountains  and other water holding receptacles.
  • Remove litter from the yard as small items hold enough water for the mosquitoes the lay eggs.
  • Stay indoors during dawn, dusk and early evening when mosquitoes are likely to bite.
  • Wear long sleeve shirts and pants for extra protection.
  • Use a repellent containing DEET on skin and clothing.
  • Protect your dog or cat with pet products that repel mosquitoes.
  • 67% + mortality in horses without vaccine
  • Cattle with West Nile Virus can generally be identified by them walking around in circles with their head down before they die.
  • Mosquito control is best done between 10 - 12 pm
  • Only the female will bite for blood
  • There are 76 species of mosquito in the southwest
  • Most have a range of 1 - 2 miles from a water source
  • The life cycle can be completed in 11 - 14 days during the summer months
  • West Nile incubates for about 3 - 14 days in the host

Mosquito reduction systems

  • We are currently offering the several different systems including yard sprays with Garlic that mosquitoes and ticks hate.

There has never been a more effective, convenient method for preventing mosquito bites in your yard.

MistAway works automatically and is virtually maintenance free. You'll never again have to spray your kids with messy repellents or remember to fog your yard before an evening cookout.

The MistAway system sprays a very fine mist of botanical insecticide through nozzles installed around the perimeter of your property. The mist settles on the grass and landscaping, killing any mosquito that comes in contact with it.

The system is programmed to automatically spray at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and other, more beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, are not.

The MistAway system also kills or repels other unwanted pests, like spiders, flies, gnats and no-see-ums.

Our insecticide's primary ingredients, derived from chrysanthemum flowers, are called Pyrethrins.

DERIVED FROM FLOWERS, BUT NOT "NATURAL"

Pyrethrins act as contact poisons, affecting the nervous system of insects.  So, they rid the property of mosquitoes and other annoying insects primarily by killing rather than repelling them. Pyrethrins are not species selective and their contact will also kill beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. Fortunately, these insects tend to be active during daylight hours when most mosquitoes are not.

Pyrethrins are rapidly degraded by sunlight or by rain, leaving the yard free of residual active ingredients. Because some plants exhibit sensitivity to direct application of some pyrethrin-based insecticides, nozzles should be placed where they do not mist directly on those plants.

A MORE EFFECTIVE SYSTEM

Smaller Droplet Size: Smaller droplets ensure a more effective and efficient mist. A mist with smaller droplets can cover a larger area, more effectively kill mosquitoes and use less insecticide than a mist comprised of larger droplets.  We build our systems to operate at just over 200 psi.  At this pressure, our nozzles yield a very fine mist which optimally balances coverage, drift and deposition of the active ingredients.

To save money, many of our competitors use cheaper hardware that operates at a lower pressure which yields a much larger droplet size.  The consumer ends up paying the price because the system uses more insecticide to stop fewer mosquitoes.

MistAway is excited to introduce the first ever-automated misting system that utilizes the patented smart cap technology, the Gen II. Our development team has been working for several years to create a misting system that was friendlier to consumers and offered more flexibility and control over the products that are misted.

Holding tank for misting system

The Gen II is an attractive, state of the art, tankless outdoor misting system.  You can place it anywhere in your yard that is convenient to a hose bib and electrical outlet.

Consistent Mist: MistAway supplies the only system in the industry with the ability to agitate the contents to ensure a consistent blend of active Mosquito mist system headingredients in every mist. Unless it is agitated, the active ingredients tend to settle near the bottom or migrate to the top. Consequently, the concentration of active ingredients can change dramatically over the life of a reservoir fill.

More Durable Components: Although it will be exposed to the elements - direct sunlight, high temperatures, freezing temperatures, rain, humidity - season after season, you should expect your misting system to run with little care or attention for many years.

This will only occur if it is built from high quality, durable materials.  From our nickel-silver plated nozzles, to the viton seals on our fittings and pump, to the powder coated enclosure, all the components in a MistAway system are built to endure.
You will enjoy the carefree benefits of your system for years to come.

Easier to Use: While a good misting system should require minimal attention on your part, you'll occasionally need to interact with it - whether it's misting prior to an evening cookout and then temporarily shutting the system off while your guests are outside, changing the timing or duration of the misting cycle or replenishing the botanical insecticide. Setting or changing the mist cycles on the our easy-to-read, digital control panel couldn't be easier.

And, if you want to take command, simply use the three-button remote control to mist in-between cycles or turn the system off from up to 300 feet away. Finally, our Zoning option and smart cap technology truly set us apart from the competition.

There are many different types of mosquito control systems available for the home owner or business, Call us today and find out more.
